I’m not the biggest fan of fighting games, and when I heard that this was a title that was going to be exclusive to the Wii I had some serious doubts. Now I have played this game about 7 months ago when Capcom was demoing it at Anime Expo 2009, and I tried it for the first time. I went into this game with serious doubts about the control scheme and and low end graphics and it being a wannabe clone of Marvel Vs Capcom with half uninteresting characters. I’m glad to see in the end I was wrong……..on some parts.
Story: As with most fighting games there is no real story behind any of it. The lineup of characters on the Tatsunoko side are close sticking to 2 or 3 characters from the same series. As where the Capcom side follows a similar yet slightly different formula with Ryu, Chun Li, and Alex being from the Street Fighter Series, and Megaman Voulnutt from Megaman legends, Roll from Megaman, and Zero from the Megaman X series. The characters span a wide range of different series from Rival Schools, Street, Fighter, Lost Planet, Dead Rising, Dark Stalkers, Megaman, Megaman X, Megaman Legends, Tekkaman Blade, Gatchaman, Ippatsuman, Yatterman, just to name a few. So I think it might be hard to have a full on coherent story line in this game.
Presentation: This is where I was most surprised considering that as far as I am concerned the Nintendo Wii’s graphics are completely unimpressive with any game released to date on the console. If you buy any kind of HD cable for the Wii you are completely wasting your money. But I have to admit that Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom is a great looking game on any T.V. I have played it on thus far. It has that Cell shaded bright coloring mixed in with the 3D style character on top of the flat 2D background. It pays real justice to its predecessors in the Marvel Vs. Capcom series.
Gameplay: Where this game falls short, is it’s difficulty. Any casual button masher can pretty much pass the arcade mode in about 30 minutes or less. Combo chains are very easy to string together and with the Wii Remote control scheme makes it childishly easy to win. As with most Vs. crossover games you team up with another character of your choice to unleash even more combos. Im told with a classic controller or the Hori Arcade Stick you have to enter manual movements but that’s not how most people are going to play this game.
Special: At the present time there is no content for this game. There is a online VS mode via Nintendo WiFi Conenct, however prepare for some
extreme LAG.
Conclusion: Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom does well to try and stand alone as a great fighting game but I think what takes away from this game is that it is on the wrong console. This is definitely a title I am hoping to see get ported to the PS2, PS3, or even the XBOX 360. The game seems like it has been to watered down for young players and casual players who are usually the owners of the Wii. The game is a fun time killer but there is no way gamers who are into serious fighting games and expect a full on challenge are going to enjoy playing this game for a long period of time. The visuals of the characters and their special moves are very pretty but visuals alone can’t make this game worth playing hours on end. If you’re looking for something fun and to keep your attention for a while then Tatsunoko is a decent title but if you’re looking for something to compete with Super Street Fighter 4 then look elsewhere.
Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom is a **** out of 5
