I didn’t really care for Resident Evil 5 when my friend Bobby introduced me to it about a year ago but was attracted to the ability to play through the ENTIRE game together, either split screen or on a private network together. After playing through Capcom’s revamped continuation of their smash hit series I must say I was slightly impressed.
Story: This story begins ten years after the destruction of Racoon City, Chris Redfield is an agent of the B.S.A.A. which is an anti-bio-organic weapon organization that travels the globe to seek out and destroy the Umbrella Corporation’s creations. Chris shows up at the beginning of the game and meets Sheva Alomar, who is a local B.S.A.A. agent, and together they battle wave after wave of infected villagers, extreme mutated monsters, and meet up with Chris’s nemeses Albert Wesker.
Presentation: Well, when this game was released it was very good. The explosions are excellent when compared to today’s games, and even being a game that is a year old it’s 10 times better than Army of Two 40th day. Resident Evil’s environment doesn’t stay in one place, it expands from starting out in a village, destroying the undead by shooting them out the back of a truck with a 50 cal machine gun, to being in ancient ruins of a lost culture from long ago. Character detail is good, facial animations are good and voice acting is better than most. Gunfire and explosions are excellent, and the cutscenes are also very good. A highlight in this type of game is the monsters. This is one area where in the past the resident evil franchise has shined, and they have again. The monsters that are developed are excellent – one term I used during the second to last boss battle was “WOW, GROSS!!!!!! It is crazy how resident evil can take a beautiful environment (for example when you are in a marsh with vegetation) and make it into something that becomes “creepy.”
Gameplay : This is a third person shooter game and controls are somewhat limited as you cannot strafe like you can in other games or shoot your gun from your hip like you can in games like Uncharted… there is a reason for this though and that reason? Suspense. The game points you to destroy the hordes of evil, more than run away when you see it. There is a big fight-or-die type of mentality in Resident Evil. A big change from past Resident Evil games is that the gameplay shifted from survival type gameplay to action. The co-op aspect in this game is excellent. Sheva and Chris work together really well when playing single player. Sheva AI is good, and “most of the time” she isn’t dying all the time. However, if you try and play this game 1 player on veteran/professional mode good luck because Sheva dies like a newb. it is definitely suggested you invite a friend along for the ride.
Special: We are getting close to the release of Resident Evil 5 Gold, which promises more gameplay and expansion on some of the story. There is a DLC Multiplayer add on that no one was playing when released and is still not worth the purchase. The game can be found for about thirty bucks, and is a definite buy at the price.
Conclusion: This game has serious replay value and can be addicting, I have played through it 4 times, and the game rewards you for your dedication by unlocking things like different character costumes and unlimited ammo for your favorite guns, one of my favorites being the magnum. Once you make the unlimited ammo it can be devastating to your enemies.
